Released on ShortsTV.
“The Sons of Mapes” unveils a hidden chapter of Texas sports history: the University of Corpus Christi Tarpons, the only all-Latin American and Caribbean collegiate tennis program in the U.S. during the 1960s and 70s. The film intimately portrays the director’s Afro-Caribbean father, Humphrey, from his youth in Curaçao to his collegiate success in South Texas, and his close bond with coach Robert Mapes. Forty years later, Humphrey reunites with his teammates to honor their ailing coach. “Mapes” is a tale of love, faith, perseverance, and the enduring bonds of family and friendship.
